I’M THINKING…
is a rare collection of poems that explores common emotions and experiences that appeal to people of various age groups, cultural backgrounds, and social statuses.

A thoughtful collection of poetry that is entertaining, conversational, and deeply inspiring.

I’M THINKING…
is rooted in the poet’s differing perspectives: as a child who was written off by the mainstream educational system; as a teacher entrusted with helping children pursue their destiny; as a university lecturer supporting student teachers; and as a parent and grandparent determined to leave a lasting legacy.

Most importantly, this book conveys the heart of someone who has emerged victoriously from the effects of debilitating past experiences. It is a work of reflection, courage, and hope – created for readers who appreciate poetry that speaks honestly to life, learning, and the human spirit.

Ah Thinking!

As de bus driver kept driving

Some people texting! Ah few people phoning!

Early morning, both young and old nodding and yawning

Dey puffy eyelids telling in the night dey not shutting

Just winking, blinking tossing… stirring.

Other people reading; some chewing and to themselves muttering

Some looking through the bus window, just looking,

I gathered that dey thinking.

So I started thinking too!

Ah thinking, how anarchy stalking the world highways,

How guns and bombs have become the order of the day

And respect for the sacredness of life is pushed away.

From the back seat, ah spot the grey beard artist,

And ah could hear him thinking

How ink is replaced by jars of crying blood

To capture the trail of horrific images left behind.

IN DE BUS!

I hear the solemn face woman thinking!

Thinking how human conscience bleeding

As anaemic minds, with terror in dey hands

Seek to rule earth’s village.

Close to the door, nobody talking but ah could hear dem thinking!

How ‘values’ continue to sink, almost becoming extinct,

While scavenger birds feast on decaying minds

And, the world’s moral laboratory, a solution it can’t find.

IN DE BUS!

De man in de white gown started studying:

How human selfishness overshadows the cries

Of those who stand in helpless place.

But from this deep slumber dey will not awake

Engaging in soul destroying games

Governed by rules and principles birthed from the septic womb,

Of the corrupted mother self- centeredness.

But I wonder if the passengers know that the driver thinking,

For a better world, we MUST continue hoping

Loving! Reaching! Searching… Transforming

FROM WITHIN!

To stop the haemorrhaging!

The Power of the Present

YESTERDAY! choices

In life’s journey we made

Here we stand!

Here we stand in the PRESENT.

Here we stand, clutching the PAST!

The present overshadowed by the storms and thorns of yesterday.

The present blurred by tomorrow’s besetting clouds,

Uncertainties and seemingly pending dismay,

So, the present we are unable to embrace,

For our fists are tightly closed,

Clutching the details of yesterday and tomorrow

And today passes,

Until our final tomorrow we face,

Not having courageously run life’s race.

The present, what a powerful place to be!

A place where can rewrite their destiny,

Informed and by the mistakes and triumph of the past,

A place where we have the choice to let go at last.

For our past was, yesterday.

Only a moment ago!

We must open our fists

And let its shadow go!

Papa’s Champion Race

Papa woke us up and announced a race!

Gently he warned, “There are millions of you I know

But your winning chance is of the same ratio.

Mama will be standing at the finishing line

Waiting with no prejudice in mind.

For the axiom is well defined;

Only the one who comes first will toe life’s line.

So with my head set like a flint,

I ran! I ran… I ran to survive!

Names of the millions starting the race, I could not tell.

But they grabbed, pushed, and elbowed as well,

Neck to neck, head-to-head

A race for life!

I heard Papa say – so I ran!

Could not stop! Could not wait!

No!

Not if I wanted to win Papa’s Champion Race.

They pulled me back, tossed me sideways!

Millions in front; millions behind,

As my eyes, I set on the lifeline.

So, steadily I ran!

Then with a lion’s sprint I soared over their heads

For THAT was the WINNING plan!

Applause came from the walls of Mama’s womb.

You vanquisher! You conquering hero… you winner!

The others you outran!

What a gallop! You are indeed the champion!

And now I hear Mamma say:

A winner from the start of life’s race

Could see that is certainly the case

As I watched you, from the starting line when Papa set the race.

Now, looking at you, far away from your conception place,

Tell me my lion child; tell me!

Do I now see a disheartened face?

Don’t you know life’s bumpy journey

Mirrors Papa’s Champion Race?

But, you are well able, to keep the pace.

Keep running!

Rest if you may

BUT!

Apply that fearless winning ways
